♦ Phonét. Consonne spirante ou n. f. une spirante : consonne produite comme une fricative, correspondant souvent à l'articulation d'une occlusive relâchée. ⇒ constrictive.

Consonne spirante et, p. ell. spirante. ,,Consonne constrictive articulée au moyen d'un rétrécissement du chenal expiratoire assez peu important de sorte que l'air s'écoule sans le bruit de friction qui caractérise la production des fricatives`` (MOUNIN 1974). Synon. (consonne) constrictive, continue. Le terme de spirante est tout à fait général; celui de fricative, sans rien dire sur le degré de fermeture, rappelle l'impression de frottement produite par le passage de l'air (SAUSS. 1916, p. 72). Seul un souffle est audible et constitue le critère de classement de ces réalisations phoniques. L'anglais connaît deux spirantes apico-dentales, la sourde [] et la sonore [] dans les mots three et then (MOUNIN 1974).
